About us

I started Northern Marine Services in 1990 and worked fitting out boats on a sub-contract basis for some time for a number of builders.

In 2000 I finally took the bit between my teeth and with the help of a substantial loan from the bank and the selling of our own boat, I then designed and built a 50ft narrow boat which I named “Mystery” and took it to the IWA national festival in Milton Keynes to show.

The boat sold soon after the show but I could have sold it three times over. Since then the business has gone from strength to strength, mainly on recommendations from delighted customers. (Letters of commendation from these customers are available).

Later I was joined by Des Cooney who assisted me with boat fitting, Winifred Southern, whose talent is soft furnishing and of course my wife Pauline who has supported me from the start and now assists with sales and design.

We have shown boats at Crick since 2002 and have had two of our boats featured in Canal Boat Magazine. Both these features are available to view on this site.

We take great pride in our work which we enjoy and we are proud of the fact we have never had a disappointed customer. There is great satisfaction in producing a boat which we have designed with the customer and brought through to completion.
